Candidates must be well-organized with excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Strong knowledge of, and willingness to comply with all NCAA, MAC, University, and USA Cheer rules and regulations is required.   Responsibilities: Responsible for providing leadership, planning, organizing and administering all aspects of Western’s Cheer program. The incumbent will be responsible for fostering and supporting student-athlete welfare; recruiting highly qualified student-athletes; practice scheduling, home game appearance and competitions; coaching student-athletes in practice and competitions; maintaining a strong academic environment; maintaining budget, conducting and managing all facets of camps, cultivating alumni, direct involvement working with program-specific fundraising as well as participation in Athletic Department fundraising. Ability to establish good rapport and relationships with players, administrators, staff, alumni, and general public is necessary. Other relevant duties may be assigned by the Director of Athletics or designee.

The Head Cheerleading Coach will coordinate all aspects of spirit teams at home events. This includes, but is not limited to: the cheer team, Western Colorado University dance team, Western mascot, Western Colorado University drumline, and half-time promotional events with corporate sponsors. With the exception of games that occur during Western school breaks, the cheer team will be present at all home football, women & men’s basketball games. The cheer team will also be present at all playoff games that Western Athletics hosts, including any playoff games that may occur during official school holiday/breaks. The cheer team will also coordinate with the volleyball, soccer, and wrestling head coaches and the Athletics Facilities & Operations Coordinator to schedule home game appearances of the cheer team at 50% or more of home events.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s Degree preferred. Minimum of three years cheer/dance coaching experience preferred. Must have current certification or ability to obtain certification in First Aid / CPR / AED. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Compensation: Position is full-time, twelve-month position with a salary of $48,500. Position is eligible for an excellent benefits package including shared premium health and dental insurance plans, life insurance, generous paid time off, a shared contribution retirement plan and, after one year of employment, tuition benefits.

Description of Position: 

Practice and Competition Instruction – Assist the head coach with efforts to teach student-athletes how to perform their sport. More specifically, assist with instructing individual student-athletes on the techniques and tactics of the sport, demonstrate techniques of the sport, evaluate student-athlete and team performance, teach and engage student-athletes in appropriate strength and conditioning techniques, assist with the development of practice and competition plans, scout opposing teams (if applicable to the sport) assist with the development of competition schedules that will prepare the team for conference and NCAA championship success.

Student-Athlete Academic Performance – Support student-athlete graduation by: monitoring student-athlete academic performance; implementing appropriate study hall, class checking and grade checking programs; partnering with faculty, tutors, mentors, advisors and other university staff to support the academic performance of student-athletes; and implementing appropriate practice and competition limitations as needed for student-athletes who are not performing adequately in the classroom.

Recruiting and Retention – Assist the head coach with efforts to recruit and retain prospective student-athletes who are: admissible to the university, NCAA qualifiers, good citizens who will represent the program well, motivated to graduate from Drury and excellent athletes in the sport.

Compliance – Promote an atmosphere of compliance for everyone who is directly and indirectly associated with the sport, comply with NCAA, conference and university rules and regulations.

Budget – Assist the head coach with the management of the budget so the program functions within the operating budget allocated by the university and any money raised to supplement the operating budget.

Fundraising – Collaborate with athletics department and advancement staff for fundraising events and promotional activities, assist with securing donations needed to supplement the sport operating budget as necessary.

Student-Athlete Development – Supplement the education student-athletes receive in the classroom by teaching them life skills that will help them be productive citizens for life, support student-athlete development programming conducted by the athletics department and university.

Community Engagement – Promote a positive image of the program and the university by building relationships with constituent group members and by personal and team participation in community service activities; maintain positive relations with various media outlets, community groups, university departments and athletics department staff members.

Sports Camps – Assist the head coach with the organization and implementation of sports camps as desired by the head coach.

Duties and Responsibilities of Head Stunt Coach
General Responsibilities – Serve as Head Coach for the Stunt program and develop the foundation for the NCAA Division II STUNT program! Purdue Northwest will begin competition in the sport of STUNT in the 2024-25 academic year. This position reports to the Director of Athletics. Plan, organize, recruit and develop the Stunt, Cheer and Dance programs. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to academic oversight, fundraising, and coordinating of camps and coaching clinics.

Coach the STUNT team in game competition
Direct practice for the Stunt team during the prescribed season
Oversee Stunt program, responsible for the development of the program
Supervise Assistant Coaches
Recruit prospective student-athletes
Lead team travel
Provide leadership and direction for the Cheer and Dance programs, responsible for the development of the programs
Oversee Cheer and Dance teams that will perform at home men’s and women’s basketball games as well as other selected games and promotional events
Oversee practice for the Cheer and Dance teams during the prescribed season
Supervise Cheer and Dance Coaches
Construct competition schedule with approval of the Director of Athletics
Assist with academic monitoring of student-athletes
Assist the Director of Athletics with public relations and fundraising activities

Education of Head STUNT Coach
Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Physical Education, Education, Fitness or related program is preferred

One year stunt, cheer, gymnastics, and / or dance coaching experience required at the professional, college or high school level
